Chapter Sixteen
MR. EVANSON STOOD AGAINST THE WALL, just staring at us. His face was impassive, but there was something bubbling just under the surface. His jaw was set in a way that couldnât hide the anger he was feeling under the facade. I wasnât sure how long heâd been in here or how much heâd heard. I didnât hear anyone come in while I was talking with Seely, but I guessed he could have snuck in while we were deep in conversation. Or when we were kissing. I suppressed a shudder at that and sent up a silent prayer that he somehow hadnât seen that part. I couldnât help the blush that crept across my cheeks, though being caught kissing would be a lot easier to explain.
Seely stood stalk-straight with his arm out in front of me. At some point, heâd taken out his dagger from its sheath. I felt a chill roll through me as I realized what that meant.
Seely thought his dad heard what I was. He also thought we might have to fight our way out of this. It didnât escape my notice that he was willing to use a dagger against his own father if that was what he needed to do. I wasnât sure if that made me feel better or worse.
âSo, Seely, it seems like thereâs a lot you and I need to talk about,â Mr. Evanson smiled without any humor, sending another chill down my spine. His deep, gravelly voice felt like it was grating on my nerve endings. âOh, and letâs not forget Miss Gold, here.â His gaze moved over me with distaste before sliding back to his son. âI knew you were going to pull something like this. I told Gold we should lock her up again and put her back under, that it was a bad decision to let her out at all. Whatever bond you two share, which is very inconvenient for me by the way, I knew it would come back to bite me. I should have taken care of either one or both of you when I had the chance.â
I didnât really like the sound of âtaken care ofâ. I was pretty sure it didnât mean sending us off to a nice vacation somewhere. It didnât mean we would be able to stay together. I realized then that being with Seely was what I wanted more than anything right now.
âI knew you two would be the downfall of what Iâve built here, but I didnât know exactly how. And now I hear that sheâs one of them? An Undead?â He laughed. âAs if I didnât already know this. Thereâs nothing that goes on regarding the AAUD or my sons that I donât know about. Who do you think sent Simon out to get you that day? Do you think this wasnât a part of my plan? Nothing catches me off guard, and you should know that by now, Son.â Mr. Evanson stepped away from the wall and Seely pressed farther into me, raising his dagger towards his father.
